The last confetti snippets on the main stage dance floor are swept up. Technicians unscrew the laser systems. Pyro experts dismantle flame jets and CO2 cannons. And in the Club Music Circle, the truss constructions of the floors move back into the trucks parked in front of the arena. All this happens while this press release is being issued at 07:35 on Monday morning.
And what was it like, the premiere in Düsseldorf? Were the expectations fulfilled? Or even surpassed? The answer: goosebumps! The approximately 90,000 guests from more than 64 nations who were distributed over the three days made the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA the largest club in the world, not only physically but also emotionally. With tens of thousands on the main stage, where they danced to the live shows of the Belgian EDM heroes Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. Where they stretched their arms to Arenadach with The Chainsmokers (who were on the verge of Stage Diving). Where they took a wonderful journey through time to the beginnings of the new millennium with the classics of the Black Eyed Peas. The visitors celebrated “The Club of the Year” in one of the biggest German event locations.
Of course, the main stage was the magnet of the three-day event with the international top headliners from the electronic music business and the spectacular light and laser show. But also the 24 Micro-Clubs, which circled the large concert area over the weekend, attracted the crowds. Perhaps even more than one might expect in advance. The so-called Club Music Circle was bursting at the seams, especially on Saturday. “We are completely overwhelmed that this concept was so well accepted”, says Bernd Breiter, CEO of the organizer BigCityBeats. “People were thrilled that the main days with tens of thousands of people celebrating were only a few meters away from the small, intimate clubs. Butan Club, WCD Pool Sessions, silq, Global Stage, 102 Club – all within walking distance. In line up: The superstars of the technoid underground, big names from Hip-Hop, Future Bass, Tech House, EDM, Minimal, and House. From techno mastermind Alan Fitzpatrick from England to Butan resident Frank Sonic to the Disco Boys from Hamburg to Love Parade founder Dr. Motte from Berlin and to HUGEL from France, who delivered the ultimate summer hit 2018 with his “Bella Ciao” remix – which of course couldn’t be missing from his set.
The premiere celebration of the BigCityBeats WORLD CLUB DOME Winter Edition in Düsseldorf – it offered an enormously varied supporting program that was attended by guests and VIPs alike. For example, many World Clubbers took the opportunity to take part in a “Shuffle Workshop” by Arina Luisa on Sunday afternoon.
Back to Mainstage, which was opened after the live performance by Sebastian Ingrosso (Swedish House Mafia) on Friday at 23:15 with a big welcome show. A dozen lasers were flickering through the arena. Flame jets that shot meters upwards. Hundreds of moving lights that made the location look like a space shuttle. The monstrous lighting system, which stretched across the entire width and height of the stadium, was perfectly programmed to sound through the huge arena.
And then, two evenings later, after the newly crowned MTV European Music Award winner Marshmello played his last track after the Grand Closing Show, the BigCityBeats WORLD CLUB DOME Winter Edition was over again, so that “the biggest club in the world” turned the arena back into a normal football stadium.
Managing Director Michael Brill of D.LIVE was visibly satisfied after the event: “With the WORLD CLUB DOME the MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA has proven its undisputed uniqueness in Europe – a stadium becomes the biggest club in winter with more than 20 stages, 150 acts, and 90,000 visitors! There were three unique club nights for Düsseldorf and NRW.
Thanks to all involved for this unforgettable party. See you next year!
